Every once in a while in life you’ll stumble across a place which you can’t help but wish is a better kept secret. Studland Bay is one of these places.
Leaning out into the English Channel, the sandy bay stretches from the village Studland all the way to the mouth of Poole Harbour. On a grey day like today, the lights of Bournemouth glitter on the other side of the bays, and the silhouette of the Isle of Wight looms out of the mist on the horizon.
Despite being natural, the sandy beach has that wonderful nostalgic smell of fresh sandpit sand, and the bay is serenely calm with little waves breaking softly on the shore.
I’m sure on a quieter day it would be a little oasis, but being a bank holiday it was packed with families walking off festive indulgence and seeking respite from each other.
We stopped at Knoll Beach, but there are several car parks along the bay depending on the type of visit you’re after; in addition to the sandy beach there is heathland and a nature reserve to explore.
Verdict: Rare glorious sandy English beach, and I cannot wait to visit on a sunny day outside of the school holidays. I can only hope it disappears from all tourist maps.
The glory of having one’s children grow up is that one can visit when it’s not busy and they, like you can start to appreciate it outside of school holidays..,,.. xxx
