Lambert’s and Coney’s Castle

Given that the Iron Age hill fort of Lambert Castle was built around 2,500 years ago, it will come as no surprise that there is no longer any remnants of a castle at the top of the hill.

Aside from a trig point and a handful of grazing cows, there is very little at the top of the hill itself, but the views across the green patchwork quilt of Dorset countryside are well worth the climb, especially on a clear day.

According to a Telegraph article about the walk, a fair was held at the top of the hill between 1709 and 1947, where they used the flattened hilltop as a racecourse. Heaven knows how they got the horses up the steep banks, or how they stopped them from falling off the edges, but I’ve not been able to find any other references to this so far.

Verdict: Not very castley, but some cracking views of quintessential English countryside
